Hazardous Areas and the ATEX Directive

Hazardous areas are areas where flammable liquids, vapours, gases or combustible dusts are likely to occur in quantities sufficient to cause a fire or explosion. Such areas are also referred to as "Ex Locations", "Zoned Areas", "Explosive Atmospheres" and "ATEX Areas". From 1st July 2003 all electrical equipment supplied for use in a hazardous area within the EU had to be certified to European ATEX Equipment Directive (94/9/EC). Consequently equipment that is certified for use in these areas is often called "ATEX Equipment" or, more generally, "Ex Equipment". The 94/9/EC Directive was replaced by the new ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) on 16th April 2016.
